For his solo exhibition at ifa Gallery Berlin, Joël Andrianomearisoa writes on the trails of his memories, he draws inspiration from the lullaby his grandmother sang to him before bedtime. This childhood memory where some of the words may be forgotten creates spaces and interstices to reinvent new lyrics.
MEASURES LULLABIES AND WHISPERS is an invitation to explore the rhythm of lullabies and the power of memory. The soothing melodies passed on from one generation to another act as a reminder of the deep-rooted connection and sense of belonging. Words may be forgotten, but the body remembers the rhythm, vibrations. The essence of lullabies, from the feelings of intimacy and belonging they evoke to the healing power they hold, become the starting point for Andrianomearisoa’s poetic exploration for this site specific installation.
Joël Andrianomearisoa was born in 1977 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, and lives and works between Paris, Antananarivo and Magnat-l'Étrange. In 2019, Andrianomearisoa represented Madagascar for the first time at the 58th Biennale di Venezia with his piece I HAVE FORGOTTEN THE NIGHT. His work has been exhibited internationally, including the MACAAL, Marrakech (2022), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2021), MAXXI, Rome (2018), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2010), the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington DC (2015) and the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005).
The exhibition is curated by Meriem Berrada and Alya Sebti and will feature a newly film named PLEASE SING ME MY SONG BEFORE YOU GO which will be premiered at the opening on 6 June 2024 with a site-specific installation.

About the ifa Galleries
The ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen Galleries in Stuttgart and Berlin present contemporary art in a global perspective, addressing post-colonial movements and artistic reflections on the themes of migration and cultural transfer. The work of the ifa Galleries is based on seeing the world from a diversity and plurality of perspectives, discovering new stories, and shaping emancipatory processes, interactions, and artistic spaces. Our focus is on long-term relationships with artists, partners, and visitors, and our exhibitions and education programmes are developed through practices of collaboration that trace global entanglements and piece them together in new forms of narrative. www.ifa.de
